Accountants don’t spend all of their time buried in numbers.

Tara Wilson, CPA, MST, a tax senior manager at Gumbiner Savett Inc., one of the largest full-service certified public accounting firms in Southern California, serves on the board of Fostering Media Connections (FMC) as treasurer, offering her time and accounting experience to help it develop internal accounting processes and maximize funding.

FMC is a nonprofit news organization that uses a mix of investigative, accountability and solution-oriented journalism to drive reform within the systems that serve vulnerable children, youth and their families. One of Wilson’s former professors while acquiring her Master of Science in Taxation, and member of the charity’s board, invited her to get involved with the organization. Wilson had been looking for a family driven charitable organization to participate in, and in November 2018 was unanimously voted onto the board as its treasurer.

Wilson began working with charities through her sorority in college. The house’s main philanthropic endeavor was to raise funds for the Arthritis Foundation. Her first experience working with a nonprofit board began in 2010, when she joined the board of the Atlanta Women’s Network as a treasurer, and as a member of the Programming Committee.

“Most small to mid-size nonprofit organizations don’t have the internal resources or funds available to allocate to finances and/or tax compliance,” said Wilson. “Volunteering my time and services alleviates that burden and allows the organization to focus its resources on achieving its core mission.”

“It is clear that giving back to the community is a strong part of Gumbiner Savett’s ethic,” said Daniel Heimpel, President of FMC. “This coupled with Tara’s incredible skill as a CPA and her leadership qualities made inviting her to our board a no-brainer. We are so lucky and grateful to have her serve with us.”
